210.64 Electrical Service Areas. The code makers in this article wanted to make light accessible to whom ever worked in the area where the electrical panel is. The code makers also want a power source (an outlet) near the electrical panel. Exception 1 says light is ok but no power source because they feel some one is going to steal power from one another. And then exception 2 says here they are referring to higher voltages light 277 and 480 or even higher where it’s not required but it is a pleasure to see this so that the person coming in to fix or install new equipment have a safe place to plug into. In my house I have a 1900 box(a regular electrical box that’s 4” x 4” x 1.5 to 3” deep) with quad(meaning 4 plugs) outlets, and off that same quad I also have two cords coming off of that 1900 box for additional power options. I also I have a light for light even if the power goes out there is no light but if I need it, it is there. Why do they call the 1900 box a 1900 box is because when the first manufacturer needed to give this device a part number that’s the number they gave it.
